Attractions

Cliff Divers

The first thing that comes to mind for many people when they think of Acapulco is the incredible bravado and the daring feats performed by the La Quebrada cliff divers.  These divers are famous the world over and are a “must-see” when visiting Acapulco.

These exciting exhibitions are presented daily.  The last show at night is enhanced with the addition of torches that are held by the divers yet adding another touch of drama to an already highly dramatic show.

Each show may be seen from a public viewing area, or you can watch from the comfort of the charming Plaza Las Glorias Mirador hotel.  (You may remember scenes from Elvis’ movie here).  You may want to call for a reservation.

Golf Courses

There are several beautifully landscaped, competitive courses to choose from.  The Imperial  Princess, located between the airport and downtown has 2 wonderfully landscaped courses; Mayan Palace Golf Club, one of the most spectacular courses on the Mexican Pacific, located just 10 minutes from the airport; Villa Vera Acapulco is located in the middle of the Golden Zone downtown near the convention center and is a legendary course situated in the hills overlooking the bay; and Tres Vidas Country Club, an incredible course also located on the Pacific Ocean, that leaves one alone to battle the natural landscape and elements.

Museo Historico de Acapulco Fuerte de San Diego

The Fuerte de San Diego History Museum in Acapulco is a good place to learn some of the histories of the state of Guerrero. The building is pentagon-shaped, and because of this, there are five main exhibition rooms. Exhibits offer unique cultural experiences, including an exhibit devoted to the Yope Indians who defended the building in heroic resistance to Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortes. The fort suffered some damage during the 1776 earthquake but has been restored since then. Today, you can see it in its near-original state.

Isla la Roqueta

Isla de la Roqueta is a 10 minute boat ride from Caleta Beach, in old downtown.  Glass bottom boats are available for this short trip.  The island is great for hiking and taking incredible photos from its many miradors (look out points).  There is a mini beach along the front of the island with gentle waters and outdoor restaurants for food and drink.  There is a cliff-side cove on the other side of the island that is good for swimming and snorkeling.

Magico Mundo Marino

Between the beaches, Caleta and Caletilla is the new Mágico Mundo Marino, an aquarium, which has indoor and outdoor marine exhibits, as well as pools, two water slides, restaurants, scuba lessons, and snorkeling equipment rentals.  It is a great place for family fun.  Near the two beautiful beaches, Caletilla and Caleta is the historical residential heart of the city with many palatial homes.  The nostalgic Hotel “The Gran Meigas” (former Hotel Caleta) is also worth a stop.  It used to be Acapulco’s most glamorous resort.

El Rollo Water Park

CICI is a water park for all ages.  There are water slides for everyone and water tobogganing, rides, and best of all the chance to interact with Dolphins.  It is an opportunity to share their element; touch them, and play and swim with absolute safety.  The park is conveniently located on Acapulco’s main strip on the Oceanside.  It is best to call for reservations.

Coyuca Lagoon & Pie de la Cuesta

North of Acapulco is a narrow strip of beach known as Pie de la Cuesta (“at the feet of sunset”), that separates the Pacific Ocean at one side from the scenic Cayuca Lagoon of the other.  Pie de la Cuesta is the ideal place to watch spectacular tropical sunsets.  The waves are huge, and the undertow is very strong.  There are small restaurants along the beach that will prepare fresh seafood for you.  The Cayuca Lagoon is noted for its tropical vegetation, tiny islands, and wildlife.  Boat tours are offered here, and water skiing is excellent.  Several scenes from well-known movies have been filmed here such as “Rambo II”, early Tarzan movies, and scenes from “African Queen.”

Tours

Several operators offer bay cruises.  See where John F. Kennedy spent his honeymoon or take a pirate cruise on scenic Acapulco Bay.  Dinner cruises, with live salsa music under the twinkling stars reflecting in the Bay of Acapulco, are sure to sweep you into a romantic mood.  Or if you prefer to have a smaller boat for only your group, that is also an option.  The staff can arrange all of this for you.  Be sure and take along a cooler of cold beer and soft drinks.

Day trips are very popular in Acapulco.  You can choose from a wide variety of tours of half-day, full-day or evening nightclub tours.

Taxco: One of the many beautiful day trips available in the State of Guerrero is a journey to the pretty colonial town of Taxco.  Taxco is also known as the silver city due to a large silver mine that was discovered by a French immigrant in the 18th century.  Herman Cortés founded the city in 1522.  The city is situated in a mountainous region and has a strong old-world ambiance with its cobblestone streets winding across the hillside between tile-roofed buildings.  The church of Santa Prisca was built by the French immigrant “Jose de la Borda” in 1759 and is one of Mexico’s most stunning churches.  The city is a silver shopper’s paradise.  The temperatures are cooler than in Acapulco, providing a nice change, especially in the hot and humid summer months.  There are fully escorted tours departing from Acapulco daily.  The trip takes around 5 hours by bus and 3 ½ hours by car.

Parasailing, Jet Skiing, and Motor Boats

The calm waters of Acapulco Bay are perfect for all types of water sports.  Parasailing, which was invented in Acapulco, can give you a thrilling view of the beautiful bay of Acapulco.  Jet skis, banana rafts, and “broncos” (mini motorboats) can be rented all around the bay.  Regular size cruising boats are also available for rental and are fabulous to cruise and see the cliff divers.

Deep Sea Fishing

The staff can arrange for a deep-sea fishing trip.  Most boats leave from La Marina and Club de Yates de Acapulco on the far side of the city, or you may also leave from the Puerto Marquez Bay located between the airport and the Villas.  The approximate cost for renting a boat is $400 and up per day, depending on the size of the boat.  Sailfish, Marlin, and Dorado can be caught in the waters off Acapulco.  Cayuca Lagoon offers great fresh-water fishing.

Acapulco’s Sportfishing Seasons:

Kinds of Fish

Sailfish

This is a deep water species that is Acapulco’s trademark. Sailfish favor warm weather and this is why they are abundant here. When a sailfish is hooked with live or dead baits, it will perform leaps and dives to set itself free. This can be an entertaining and exciting event for a fisherman.

Pacific Blue Marlin

This particular marlin has a beautiful cobalt blue color with sharp dorsal and anal fins and pectoral fins that fold back against its body. It uses its bill to stun its prey, mostly tuna. Some blue marlins can grow up to 15 t and 1800 lbs.

Dorado

The dorado can be caught most of the year but it peaks between September to March. It can grow up to 80 lbs. and is popular for its meat.

Daytime  & Nighttime Fishing

  1. Acapulco fishing charters can be arranged to accommodate the guest’s schedule and wishes. You can go on daytime or nighttime expeditions. Recommendations from your charter company will be given depending on the season and the weather.
  2. Daytime deep-sea fishing is usually done from 3 to 8 miles from the shore where the sailfish and others are abundant.
  3. Nighttime bottom fishing is done in the Acapulco Bay and the surrounding area where red snapper & grouper can be caught.

Acapulco sport fishing is an activity that everyone in the family can enjoy regardless of age or experience. The fishing guides are bi-lingual, experienced, and knowledgeable. Sportfishing charters can be easily arranged through the internet, your concierge, or by visiting the offices of the Acapulco sportfishing companies

Bingo

Bingo is located inside of the Jai Alai (pronounced hi-ligh) facility and can be played there every evening.  Jai Alai is an exciting Basque ball game.  Open daily from 6:00 P.M. and located across the street from the Hyatt Regency Hotel.  Jai Alai or Pelota Vasca (Basque Ball) is played hurling the ball (pelota) with the cesta directly into the front wall. The other player must catch the ball (with the cesta) on the fly or at the first bounce and throw it in one fluid motion. Only sites devoted to Jai Alai are appropriate for this category.

Discos/Bars

There are several fun discos in the city close to the Villas and downtown – Palladium, Mandara, and Baby O, to name a few.  Most of them do not open until 10 P.M. or 11 P.M. and stay open until the early morning hours, which might be sunrise!  Men need to wear nice jeans and shirt and women nice clothes too.

There are a few nice bars for an afternoon/early evening cocktail and entertainment:  Si Señor, has a great terrace with ocean front view for afternoon cocktails; Sky Garden, an open-air bar; El Flamingo Hotel, once owned in part by the so-called Hollywood Gang – Johnny Weismuller and John Wayne is nice for an afternoon, and it sits above the pacific ocean with incredible views; and Barlovento in town.

Soar Above a Stunning Blue Bay on the World’s Largest Over-water Zip Line

Attention adventure lovers!  The coastal Mexican city is home to XTASEA, the largest over-water zip line in the world. The line, which opened in March, extends for more than a mile across Puerto Marquez Bay and reaches speeds of up to 75 mph at an altitude of 328 feet.

“XTASEA promises to be one of Acapulco’s main tourist attractions and we have great hopes that it will be a success for the destination,” Pedro Haces, president of the Acapulco Destination Marketing Office.  Additionally noted that the over-the-top zip line is simply one part of the recently announced billion-dollar investment aimed at enhancing the destination’s tourism offerings.
